Have you been feeling tired with a headache, chills, shortly followed by high fever, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes (especially in the neck), it could be more than the common flu.

It seems mononucleosis, also known as mono or the kissing disease, is making its rounds, especially in this area.

Those who are more susceptible to this condition are teens and young adults.

Mononucleosis is a viral disease caused by the cytomegalovirus.  This is in the herpes family and is linked with Epstein-Barr, which is better known as chronic fatigue.

This doesn’t mean that everyone who contracts mono will develop chronic fatigue, or that everyone who has chronic fatigue has had mono, but the virus as well as the potential is there.

The first action of many doctors is to give an antibiotic for mono.  An anti-biotic works on bacterial infections not on viral, so unless there is an accompanying bacterial infection the antibiotic is useless, as a matter of fact ampicillin has been noted to strongly aggravate mono.

It is also wise to avoid aspirin at this time.

The cytomegalovirus (mono virus) is found in saliva and at one time believed to only be transferred through kissing, sharing eating utensils or drinking after someone either from their glass or from a water fountain.  The latest medical book says that it can be passed by air-borne droplets from coughing or sneezing.

One medical book says that the incubation period for mono is anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks, while another says symptoms occur 4 to 7 weeks after exposure.  Viruses on a whole are very resilient, so it might be wise to use precautions to allow for either of the projected incubation periods.

Recovering from mono may take more time, there have been cases where someone takes up to a year to recuperate.

Bed rest is important for all mono sufferers but is vital for those who may experience an enlargement of the spleen or liver.  The body heals best when it is at rest.

The medical profession may not have an effective regimen for mono but nature has; it’s called your immune system.

Things that stimulate your immune system are:

Vitamin C (suggested taken to bowel tolerance [to achieve bowel tolerance - start at 1000 mg 3 times a day and increase the amount until you induce diarrhea then back off 1 pill and stay just under the amount that caused the diarrhea.]).  When you mega-dose vitamin C it is important to supplement with calcium and B-complex.

Protein is needed to help the formation of antibodies (4 oz. a day)

Historically, yarrow has been esteemed as an anti-viral herb, so has Pau D’arco, garlic, echinacea and germanium.

The Chinese viral combination called VS-C would to me be the combination of choice.

L-Lysine deficiency may make you more susceptible to viruses.

It may be wise to nutritionally support both the liver and the spleen

For swollen glands you can’t beat Lymph Cleanse (formally IGS II) or if you are hypoglycemic Lymph Cleanse for hypoglycemics (formally HIGS II).

As with any illness good nutrition, plenty of water and rest are essential.

If you have been exposed to or are experiencing the symptoms of mono, I suggest that you ask your doctor for a heterophile agglutination test which can determine if you have mono.  This disease should not be taken lightly, because the effects could conceivably last a lifetime.
