People are not catching up on their Z’s, as they should. Sleep deprivation is a growing health concern. Sleep is as vital to health as is exercise. When you exercise you tear down weaker cells, which spurs the body into making superior cells to replace them. This process happens most efficiently when you sleep.
Chronic lack of sleep can weaken the immune system and can dull the mind. It can keep the body from healing and it can wear out the organs and glands at an accelerated rate.
The levels of sleep needed differ throughout your lifetime. From birth throughout childhood 10 hours is suggested, for teens, 9 hours is suggested and by the time we become adults 7 or 8 hours.
It is best to get this sleep between 9, 10 or 11 PM to 5, 6 or 7 AM. Power-naps (less than 1 hour) through out the day can supplement (a slight deviation from) the required amount of sleep.
There are 4 main causes of chronic lack of sleep. The first is because people do not value sleep or make the time needed for it.
This article is on the other 3 causes of sleep depravation, some call it insomnia.
    Days and nights mixed up.

Often people tell me they could easily sleep for 8 hours if, they could sleep-in in the morning. No matter how tired they are during the day at bedtime they are wide-awake. Often babies get their days and nights mixed up. This is a very common symptom of lacking Pantothenic acid AKA Vitamin B-5. I know personally that I noticed a significant improvement on sleeping pattern when taking 2 tablets a day (early in the day for breakfast or no later than lunch).

    SOY

There is much controversy over soy products right now. Once thought of as a life saver for woman who had a tendency for breast cancer, no is shunned by many in the natural health field.
I no longer recommend soy milk or most soy products. Not because of the controversy, but because most soy products in the market (actually all commercial soy products) are now bioengineered.
Bioengineering it splicing the DNA of one thing into the DNA of a plant or seed, most commonly it is a virus DNA in the DNA of seeds. They do this because insects will no longer eat it. Well, I wouldn’t eat it either!

    Thin Myelin Sheathing

Among other things, the myelin is a buffering for the nervous system. It allows a deeper sleep where little noises do not awaken and where dreaming is possible. If you do not dream every’ night you are not getting into the 4th level of sleep where the body heals most efficiently. This is a strong indication that your myelin sheathing is too thin.
To nourish the myelin, I suggest Flaxseed oil (an average of 2 tablespoon a day taken with a protein), Spirulina (an average of 8 a day taken before 2 in the afternoon so not to cause energy at night) and a nervine combination such as Chinese Stress Relief, Nerve Control or for children under 16 Stress-J (start with the amount on the bottle and increase until dreaming nightly and remembering the dream for about 20 mill upon awakening).

Wake up in the wee hours of the morning

Once asleep, a person should sleep through the whole night. The body also should not produce urine at night. If you wake up on your own (opposed to a phone call or a child etc.) during the night, it strongly indicates your liver is a under par. Even if it is prostrate related (weakened prostate is often stemming from a liver unable to do its job).
The more chronic waking up is, the more weakened the liver and suggest you nourish the liver.
My favorite combination for the liver is Liver Cleanse. I would start with what is on the bottle and increase until I slept the whole night without waking up. Often this takes an aggressive amount, but so far no one has told me it didn’t work if taking enough.
    For Occasional Sleep Problems

For the occasional sleepless night I suggest Passion Flower, HVP or Herbal sleep. Melatonin, if used once in a great while should not pose a health risk.
